The roast of Flavor Flav took place this weekend in Burbank, California. Mel and I were invited to cover the red carpet, but sadly, I was in Southern California a week too early to make it. Dammit. I probably would have enjoyed it. Anyway, Jimmy Kimmel crossed a line that made Comedy Central censors furrow their brows disapprovingly.
During last night's four-letter fest in honor of the "Flavor of Love" star, Kimmel was poking fun at the fact that Flav has several children with several different women, when he said that "Chris Benoit is a better father than you."Tasteless? Of course. But Jesus, isn't that what these roasts are all about? Is it only OK if you toss out curses and racial slurs with reckless abandon? At Hugh Hefner's roast, not even a month after 9/11, Gilbert Gottfried said he couldn't get a direct flight to New York because the plane had to stop at the Empire State Building first. That aired. Is the Chris Benoit thing so much worse? Maybe it's because it's such a personal thing, and not something that we collectively need to get over.
Maybe (and I'm pretty sure this is it) this post ended up being not so much funny as reflective. If you have a problem with this, shut up. It's a crazy world out there, folks.
